The next time you decide to work on your form, be careful which gym you choose!
The weights, equipment screens and each piece of equipment itself has more than a million bacteria per square inch, many of which can cause pneumonia or sepsis. That’s why the best gyms in the world clean their equipment regularly.
From cardio to strength training, all gyms offer plenty of equipment. But science has new information that every fan of the gym needs to hear – equipment may expose us to dangerous bacteria.
Working out in a gym without weights is no workout at all. There can’t be a workout without weights. Everybody uses weights, which makes them the most dangerous. Every time you take the weights or the touch the screen on the treadmill, you come into contact with bacteria that cause pneumonia or sepsis, and some of them are even resistant to antibiotics. Researchers from FitRated took bacteriological samples from as many as 27 different pieces of fitness equipment and found that each piece of equipment has more than one million bacteria per square inch.
The average exercise bike has 39 times more bacteria than the tray in the school cafeteria, typical ergo-meter machine has 74 times more bacteria than the taps in public toilets, and weighs on average 362 times more bacteria than the toilet seat. All three pieces of equipment also have a gram positive ”coca”, bacteria that commonly cause skin infections and diseases.
One member of the research team explained that the reason for this is simple – exercise equipment is used by broader community of people, and because of that it comes to the rapid growth in the number of bacteria. Think of it as long handshake with extremely sweaty person.
There are also registered gram-negative bacteria that cause infections resistant to antibiotics, as well as gram-positive, which are not harmful to humans, but may occasionally cause infections. In addition, the researchers discovered bacterium Bacillus, a potential cause of inflammation of the ear, eye and respiratory infections.
The presence of the bacteria on the most commonly used equipment is not too shocking information for the cheapest gym, which are not bothering with cleaning. Most of the people are not even aware of the possible bacteria in the gym. So, before you sign up in a gym, take your time to look around and see if the gym its clean enough.
